Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to challenge certain calls made by the official, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
